One thing I can’t stand is big cameras. They are intimidating for the person on the receiving end and they are heavy to carry around.
There was a time, before digital cameras, that in order to obtain great quality images I needed to use great big medium format cameras that weighed 2.5kg each! Thankfully with the advances in camera technology, the quality of images has improved and the size of cameras is reducing.
The big digital SLR camera is still the work-horse for most wedding photographers. They are reliable, they produce great image quality and they are easy to maintain. They’re just not for me.
New Era of Small, Professional Cameras
I switched to a new type of camera (pictured above) that gives me the reliability and image quality of a big SLR but in a much more compact size. That change was perhaps one of the best choices I’ve made as a photographer. I also think they look cool and retro (but I’m a bit sad like that).
Blending In
My job is all about being discrete so big cameras don’t work. I need something that helps me to blend in with the guests – an essential part of capturing the candid images that I like to take and my clients love. Wedding guests do eventually guess I’m the “wedding photographer” as I carry two cameras (sometimes three!) but the small camera size helps people to relax around me.
I still get other professional photographers turn their nose up at the equipment I use, but I guess they just haven’t seen the light yet 🙂
